Step-by-Step Guide: How We Successfully Traveled to Thailand for the First Time (A Beginner-Friendly Tutorial 🇹🇭✈️)

Traveling abroad for the first time can be exciting—and at the same time, scary. Lalo na if it’s your first international trip, first time flying outside the country, or first time dealing with immigration in another country.

This blog is a step-by-step guide based on our real experience traveling to Thailand. We’re sharing what we prepared, what happened at the airport, how we handled immigration, and tips that really helped us have a smooth and successful trip.

This is written especially for first-time international travelers, couples, and Filipinos who want to travel abroad with confidence.

STEP 1: Preparing the Required Documents (Very Important!)

Before anything else, documents are everything. Kahit gaano ka ka-excited, if kulang or hindi maayos ang papers mo, you might not be allowed to fly.

Here are the documents we prepared before traveling to Thailand:

✅ Passport

• Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months

• Check if your passport has enough blank pages

• Always bring your physical passport, not just photos

✅ Flight Tickets

• Printed copy (recommended)

• Digital copy on your phone

• Make sure round-trip ticket siya (important for immigration)

✅ eTravel (Philippine e-Gov App)

• Register on the eTravel system before departure

• You can download the eGov PH app

• Screenshot your QR code (just in case mawalan ng internet)

✅ Proof of Income / Financial Capacity

This is very important but often overlooked.

Examples:

• Bank statement

• Payslip

• Certificate of employment

• Online business proof (screenshots, invoices, dashboard)

• Remittance receipts (if applicable)

💡 Tip: Kahit hindi hanapin, always bring proof. Mas okay na handa kaysa kabado.

✅ Cash / Money

• Bring enough cash in pesos

• We withdrew money in Thailand, but still good to have cash

• You can also bring a debit card for ATM withdrawal

✅ Marriage Certificate (In Our Case)

Since our reason for traveling was to celebrate our anniversary, I brought our marriage certificate.

And good thing I did—because it was asked by the Philippine immigration officer.

Luckily, na-grasp ko agad yung marriage certificate before we left home. This document helped support our reason for travel and made our explanation stronger.

💡 Lesson: Always bring supporting documents related to your purpose of travel.

STEP 2: Domestic Flight – Butuan to Manila ✈️

Our journey started at Bancasi Airport (Butuan) going to Manila.

This was a connecting flight, so we made sure:

• We arrived early at the airport

• All documents were organized in one folder

• Phones fully charged

The domestic flight went smoothly, no issues at all.

STEP 3: Layover in NAIA Terminal 3 (3 Hours)

We had around 3 hours layover at NAIA Terminal 3, and both flights were in the same terminal—very helpful.

What We Did During Layover:

• Walked around the terminal

• Ate light food

• Checked flight information monitors

• Rested and stayed alert

💡 Tip: Don’t relax too much during layover. Always check the monitors and announcements.

STEP 4: Gate Change Experience (Very Realistic Airport Scenario 😅)

At first, our boarding gate was Gate 109. So we waited there patiently.

Then suddenly, announcement came:
👉 We needed to transfer to Gate 116

Gate 116 was quite far from Gate 109, so we literally brisk-walked papunta doon with our carry-ons.

When we arrived:

• The gate was still being used by a Guam flight

• So we waited on the side of the lobby

We waited for almost 2 hours again.

💡 Tips from This Experience:

• Always listen to announcements

• Don’t panic during gate changes

• Wear comfortable shoes

• Time management is very important

Finally, boarding started—and we hopped into the aircraft.

STEP 5: Manila to Thailand via Cebu Pacific 🇵🇭➡️🇹🇭

Our international flight was Manila to Thailand via Cebu Pacific.

The flight itself was smooth. We rested as much as we could because we knew we would arrive early morning.

We landed in Thailand around 4:00 AM.

STEP 6: Thailand Immigration – Be Honest, Always

Next stop: Thailand Immigration.

This part is very important.

We lined up, prepared our passports, and stayed calm.

The immigration officers may ask:

• Purpose of travel

• Length of stay

• Where you’ll stay

• Return ticket

💡 Very Important Tip:
👉 Always be honest.

One of the people in front of me was not allowed to pass. Naiwan namin siya. We’re not sure of the exact reason, but it reminded us how important honesty and complete documents are.

We answered confidently and truthfully—and we passed without any issues.

STEP 7: Withdrawing Money in Thailand 💰

After immigration, diretso kami sa ATM machine inside the airport.

We withdrew:

• 10,000 Baht

• Approx. ₱19,000+ pesos

💡 ATM Tips:

• Use international debit cards

• Expect small withdrawal fees

• Withdraw enough to last a few days

Having cash made things easier for small expenses.

STEP 8: Booking Grab & Airport Pickup 🚕

After withdrawing money, I booked a Grab.

Important things to know:

• Follow the signs for Grab Pickup Area

• You really need to wait in the designated section

• Don’t stand randomly outside

The Grab system in Thailand is organized and reliable.

💡 Tip: Screenshot your booking details in case of connection issues.

STEP 9: Transportation Was Stress-Free

From airport to hotel and all our trips, Grab worked perfectly.

No language barrier problems, no stress negotiating prices, and very safe.

For first-time travelers, this is a huge relief.
